God sends his angels to give us messages as in Revelations chapter 1 verse 1: “The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John (the Baptist), who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.”   God’s law for Israel was given to Moses by an angel, see Acts 7:53 “you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.” See also Galatians 3: 19 “The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.” God’s angels/messengers between God and man are true to God, they do not die, they do not marry but they do the will of God without exception.  So, are they automatons of some kind?  Well, they could be but that is something we do not know and why would God want to bother us with such detail, their role is as messengers and that, apparently is all we really need to know. But they do have only limited knowledge and limited powers.  Matthew 24: 36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”  So, what this also flags up is that God and Jesus, his son, are two entirely separate people because, as you see, only God the father knows but not the son. There has been much speculation in the origin of angels.  Are they saints of a previous creation, or a special creation to do God’s bidding without question? In Genesis 1 the Hebrew word for God is Elohim which means mighty ones (plural you notice). Genesis 1. 26. “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” The creation account makes it very clear that God was firmly in control but that these angels were helpers in some way.
