According to your bible there are angels but they are certainly not those angels of old perverted quack religions or weird man-made notions. Your bible contains eye-witnesses of angels, indeed in some respects YOU may qualify as an angel! (More on that later). WINGED ANGELS? So where do you go to discover more about them? Artists over the years have depicted highly imaginative ones with huge butterfly wings (and arms), those images seem to have stuck with us but, except for visions there is nowhere in your bible where angels have wings, why would they even need them! Yes, there are things like winged angels (cherubim and seraphim) on the lid of the golden ark of the covenant but obviously these are man-made and not active beings. A reasonable question to ask is, why would they have wings, do they need wings? Let’s jump straight to Genesis 18:1-2 “The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.” Reading on through Genesis 18 it is quite clear that these three men were God’s messengers/angels. No wings, they looked like men. Look at MARK 16: 4 “But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.” Again; no wings. Sometimes angels are described as God’s mighty ones, or the host of heaven, indeed God is sometimes spoken of as the Lord of hosts so, there’s lots of them. Lots? Take a look at what Jesus says about them in Matthew 26:53 (New International Version) “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” ARE YOU AN ANGEL? But what about you, what do you know about angels? First, let’s get the original Greek meaning of the word ‘angel’. The word is ‘angellos’ which means ‘messenger’. Now you see how/why you could be a type of angel when you speak to someone about God. Sometimes angellos can be a Divine messenger. In Luke chapter 1 verse 19 we read ““I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news”. Talking of good news, which angel do you remember at Christmas-time? Surely, the angel Gabriel that visited the virgin Mary. See Luke 1: 26-38. So, you see angels have been a part of your life already, even if it was only in the school play!
